Cathedral Cove had been on my New Zealand bucket list for a while and after going twice,
I can honestly say it’s one of those places that lives up to the hype.

I visited once in summer and once in autumn, and both experiences were completely different… but equally worth it.

What to expect at Cathedral Cove

Cathedral Cove is one of the most iconic spots in New Zealand, known for its natural rock arch connecting two beautiful beaches.

The first time I went, the weather was perfect blue sky, warm sun, and calm water. I even went for a swim, which made the whole experience feel unreal.

The second time, it was a bit colder and cloudier, and it even started raining… but somehow, it still had its charm. The place feels peaceful no matter the weather.

And yes, it’s also where a scene from The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was filmed 👀

How to get there

I’ve been to Cathedral Cove twice, once driving from Auckland and once from Tauranga and both times the road trip was part of the adventure.

Driving times from major cities

  • From Auckland → around 2.5 to 3 hours

  • From Tauranga → around 1.5 to 2 hours

  • From Hamilton → around 2 to 2.5 hours

The roads are scenic but winding, especially once you reach the Coromandel Peninsula, so give yourself a bit of extra time and avoid rushing.

Where to park

The most common starting point is the Cathedral Cove car park in Hahei (Hahei Beach Road car park).

⚠️ Important: parking rules sometimes change depending on the season, so it’s worth checking before you go.

From the main car park, the walk to Cathedral Cove takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your pace and photo stops.

The walk to Cathedral Cove

The track itself is honestly part of the experience.

Expect:

  • stunning coastal views

  • turquoise water viewpoints

  • rolling green hills

  • several scenic photo spots along the way

On the way, there’s a small detour (about a 10 minutes loop) that leads to an incredible viewpoint.

That’s actually where I watched the sunset and it was one of my favourite moments there 🧡

Can you get there without a car?

Yes, but it’s more complicated.

From Auckland or Tauranga, you would need a combination of:

  • intercity buses

  • local transfers

  • possibly a shuttle from Hahei

It’s doable, but much easier if you have your own car or campervan.

Other ways to reach Cathedral Cove

If you want something more adventurous, you can also:

This is actually a really cool way to see the coastline from the water and you avoid the walking track altogether.

Best time to visit

From my experience:

  • Early morning → more peaceful

  • After 4pm → way less crowded (huge difference)

But ⚠️ there’s something important to know:

At high tide, you can’t always walk through the arch to the other side of the beach.

So if you want to explore everything, try to go at low tide.

Can you swim there?

Yes ! And I did both times !

  • In summer → perfect, super enjoyable

  • In autumn → still doable, but definitely colder

Even when the weather wasn’t amazing, the water and the vibe still made it worth it.

My tips (don’t skip this)

  • Go after 4pm for fewer people

  • Check the tide before going

  • Bring water and some snacks or a picnic and enjoy the beach

  • Take your time, the views on the way are just as beautiful

  • Don’t skip the small viewpoint loop

Bonus tip !

If you start from Hot Water Beach, you can dig your own natural hot pool in the sand at low tide, such a cool experience.
